By just visiting this site you have assisted us in achieving our goal – to passionately grow the performing arts in our amazing and beautifully creative country. Your Soapbox is about revolution – building the theatre-going and culturally strong community around it. We love the performing arts and strongly desire them to achieve their full potential amongst the rich and diverse cultures of South Africa. And we want you to share that passion too!
It all began when one of our number decided he had had enough of seeing quality shows close early due to lack of support or marketing. So a bold and ambitious idea was born. As with all radical ideas it has been refined and reshaped a number of times and will evolve as the company grows. For now the main focus is to promote the performing arts by making them accessible to as many people as possible, and to give a voice to those people who care enough to attend the performances and share their opinions. Each one of us can make a difference, but we need to speak up and step out.
At Your Soapbox theatres and venues have the opportunity to showcase their shows and performances without the clutter of other forms of entertainment. Performers across the broad spectrums of talent and genre benefit from an equal platform and an increased opportunity for their work to be seen and enjoyed for its full intended duration. And the man and woman in the street have the benefit of a simple but both effective and informative shop window to the performing arts, together with a channel through which they can express their sentiments and provide their own feedback. Gone is the corporate clutter that minimizes the individual; this is the performing arts where performers, venues and the audience each have vital and mutually dependant roles.
Through lateral thinking and creative promotion, the so-called “back stage” or “peripheral” people in the world of the performing arts will have the opportunity to promote themselves and their work and connect with the right people in order to advance in their chosen careers. And schools, small and large businesses, church groups, and all manner of other special interest groups will find the opportunity to be part of the growth, development and even the outworking of the performing arts from both sides of the curtain. The opportunities are limitless, because life really is a stage…
Somehow we have to pay the rent and that will take place through advertising and ticket sales. But we are totally committed to the development of the performing arts and also to the upliftment of the underprivileged communities around our beautiful country. A significant percentage of every rand made by Your Soapbox will be donated to the Sprinkled Red Trust, which will be responsible for the outworking of these visions and social responsibilities. Join us, it’s an entertaining journey!
